Added Resistance in Waves, Part 2: The Method in Practice
From physics to a defensible number: the SNNM method and how it earned regulatory standing, the spectral assembly that closes the 'which wave period' problem, real seaways as windsea plus swell evaluated as separate systems, what validation does and does not promise, and how the number is spent in trials, monitoring, routing and claims.

- Who it's for
- Performance analysts, sea-trial engineers, weather-routing users and anyone who must produce, or challenge, a wave correction with money attached. Part 1 built the physics; this part builds the working method.
- Assumed knowledge
- Part 1 of this course pair, which owns the mechanisms, the response curve, the wave spectrum and the data sources this part assumes throughout.

What you will be able to do
By the end of the course. Each outcome names the lessons that deliver it, and the final exam samples every one of them.
- Recount how the SNNM method was developed, validated adversarially and adopted into the standards, and state what that path says about how a method earns regulatory trust. Lesson 1
- Interpret the ship and wave parameters that drive an arbitrary-heading added-resistance calculation (what the motion term asks, what the reflection term asks) and respect the method's validity envelope. Lesson 2
- Explain how a regular-wave transfer function is integrated over a reconstructed spectrum, why wave systems are summed rather than averaged, and what directional spreading adds. Lesson 3
- Evaluate a real seaway as separate windsea and swell systems (each spectrum at its own relative heading, contributions summed) with energy-honest rescaling of partition heights and a graceful total-sea fallback. Lesson 4
- State what a validation does and does not establish, recognise the compensating-error failure mode that lets a wrong implementation look right for months, and apply the disclosure discipline that keeps a wave correction honest. Lesson 5
- Apply added-resistance estimates correctly in the four arenas that consume them (trials, monitoring, routing, claims) with the sanity checks and uncertainty statements each arena demands. Lesson 6
Part 1 ended with a response curve and an honestly described sea. This part turns them into a number someone will eventually have to defend.
It opens with the method the industry actually runs, the SNNM regression: how it was built, how it survived an adversarial validation by towing-tank institutions, and how it was adopted into the sea-trial standard. Then inside it: what the motion term and the reflection term each ask of the ship, and where the method's applicability fences stand. Then the machinery that makes the number honest for a real ocean: the spectral assembly, which evaluates the response curve across every wavelength the sea contains instead of betting everything on one, and, in doing so, quietly closes the "which wave period" question, because no single evaluation wavelength exists any more. Then the production reality most courses never reach: a real seaway is usually two seas at once, a locally grown windsea and an arriving swell with its own height, period and direction, and the honest evaluation treats them as separate systems and sums them, never averages. Then the hardest lesson of the six: what "validated" actually means, what the published scatter allows you to claim per heading, and why two compensating errors can make a wrong implementation look plausible for months. The course closes where the number gets spent: trials, monitoring, routing and claims, each with its own rules of engagement.
The opening lesson is free to read as a sample.

How was this course?
You have completed every lesson. One rating and, if you like, one line: it goes to the author, and it is how the course gets revised.
€149 + VAT
Paid once, for one person, for as long as the Academy runs: every lesson, the 2 Excel workbooks, the final examination and the certificate. Part of the Added Weather Resistance specialisation, which costs less than its courses bought one at a time.
Buying online needs JavaScript switched on in your browser. Otherwise write to info@blueautonomy.gr and we arrange access.

Common questions
What exactly is included?
6 lessons (about 63 minutes in total), 50 quiz questions with explained answers, and 2 working Excel calculators: Two-system seaway comparator, Sea-state penalty estimator.
How much does it cost?
€149 plus VAT, paid once: €184.76 with 24% VAT, which is what an individual in the EU pays; outside the EU no VAT is added, and a company in another EU country with a VAT number valid in VIES pays the net price. That buys every lesson, the 2 Excel workbooks, the final examination and the certificate, for one person, for as long as the Academy runs. The course is also part of the Added Weather Resistance specialisation, which costs less than its courses bought one at a time. Everything else is on the pricing page.
Is there work to do, or is it only reading?
2 lessons carry a required exercise, about 15 minutes of hands-on work in total. You download that lesson's Excel workbook, follow the numbered steps against the numbers the lesson states, then change one input and watch the answer move. The exercises are where the method stops being something you have read and becomes something you can run; the stated course time includes them.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. The course ends with a graded final exam, marked on our server rather than in your browser: you see your score and which questions you got wrong, but not the answers, because the questions are drawn from a pool. Pass it and you get a PDF certificate in your name, with a certificate number on it.
That number is the point. Anyone you show the certificate to can check it themselves at academy.blueautonomy.gr/verify, with no account and no email to us: the page states the name, the course and the date we issued it. A certificate nobody can verify is a decorated PDF, and we would rather issue one that stands up.
Can I preview the course?
Yes: the first lesson, The SNNM Story: How a Formula Earned Regulatory Standing, is free to read in full. It is a real lesson, not a trailer: same depth, same quiz.
Do I need prior knowledge?
Part 1 of this course pair, which owns the mechanisms, the response curve, the wave spectrum and the data sources this part assumes throughout.
